Today, organizations of all sizes are challenged to do more with less. For large and mid-sized companies with millions or hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in enterprise resource planning systems, the charge to increase efficiency is perplexing. After all, wasn't the implementation of such sophisticated systems as ERP targeted specifically at reducing inefficiencies and, in turn, strengthening the financial bottom line? In reality, these organizations are finding that they are not seeing the return on investment they initially anticipated. Bottlenecks continue to exist in the way they are using ERP systems. Data, documents, and images are difficult to find and retrieve from users' desktops, resulting in decreased productivity. ERP systems are not necessarily linked to existing business processes, resulting in a steep learning curve as employees try to adapt to seemingly uncompromising technology. In addition, collaboration between internal and external resources is nearly impossible, resulting in strained relationships with associates, customers and vendors.
