What a way to start a century: First the Y2K bug, which ended with a whimper, and then the stock market's bludgeoning of overvalued pure dot-coms. But things could have been worse. Consider the gloomy scenarios analysts and futurists painted for us as we moved from the industrial to information economy over the last couple of decades. Many predicted massive workforce dislocations; the rise of "pink-collar ghettos," as women were relegated to data-entry roles in automated workplaces; and the transformation to a service economy of fleeting, low-wage jobs. But look what has happened. We adapted, retooled, and retrained. Now, service jobs go begging to be filled, and hundreds of thousands of IT and technical positions abound. We are inundated with entrepreneurial opportunities.
