China is a country noted for its vast territory and time-honored civilization. Cultural sites can be found across the country, including the famous Silk Road, which was started in the 2~(nd) century BC and served as terrestrial and maritime outlets for the cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world. So understanding these legacies of human development is of great significance in exploration of the history both Chinese and worldwide. Archeology is a scientific disciplinary specializing in the scientific study of material remains of past human life and activities. It made its debut at the beginning of the 19~(th) century in the West and appeared in this country in the early years of the 20~(th) century. Starting from a single branch, archeology by now has grown into a flourishing disciplinary cluster covering environmental archeology, remote-sensing archeology and underwater archeology. In particular, its growth features an inter-disciplinary integration by borrowing theory, methodology and technical means from social and natural sciences and in this way, both the width and depth of its exploration are further advanced. At present, the high technology for acquirement and analysis of the space-relayed data, whose typical representatives include the space-based earth observing technology, geographic information system, global positioning system and virtual reality technology, has been a key measure in exploring the layout of historical sites' spatiotemporal distribution and reestablishing the history of ancient civilization. Also, it has become an indispensable means for constructing a managerial system of cultural legacy information.
