Intellectual property (IP) reuse is a strategy employed by design groups to create complex designs more quickly by leveraging the expert knowledge embodied in existing functional blocks. The availability of IP continues to increase, with designers able to select appropriate IP from both in-house libraries compiled from past designs and third-party vendors. However, reusing IP does not automatically offer significant gains. If IP is delivered to the designer as a standalone module with no thought to how it will be integrated into a design, then the amount of work required by the designer to use the IP effectively may outweigh the benefits of buying the IP in the first place. Platform-based design is a methodology meant to address many of the shortcomings of basic IP reuse strategies. In short, platform-based design means preparing IP to be easily configured and integrated into designs.
