As digital print technology continues to advance, wide-format printers (now defined by some as 24 to 87 inches wide) produce customized wall coverings, refrigerator doors, cabinets, bath mats, glass, and garage doors. "Now it really doesn't matter if media is in a roll because some [digital printers] can print on anything," states Michael Flippin, vice president of Web Consulting Inc., a Boston-based consulting firm. "Flatbed printers, for instance, decrease the need for certain media types, so in some cases, instead of purchasing self-adhesive material and then adhering it to a board, the printer can print directly on the board." MacDermid ColorSpan, for instance, just introduced the DisplayMaker 72SR wide-format flatbed solvent inkjet printer, which prints directly on rigid materials such as display boards like Fome-Cor. Although the number of worldwide installations of flatbed printers is small, says Flippin, it is growing significantly and new markets are opening up.
