Here's a simple definition from CAP Ventures, the well-known international strategic consulting firm for providers and users of digital business communication technologies and services: "electronically distributing a file and then physically printing the job near the point of final delivery." Sound obvious? Then imagine how it might work in both corporate and print-for-pay settings. Picture first a multi-office scenario, where Human Resources in a big corporation posts a four-color, 50-page PDF report on individualized health insurance policy options on an internal web server, making it available to all its employees in the company's five different offices around the U.S. Recipients can either download the PDF to their workstations and view it on their computers, or print it out on their color workgroup or desktop printers, if they choose.
