Stephanie Carter generates such an abundance of artwork in numerous styles that you'd think she were really five people. Well, in a way, she is. Carter, a successful commercial illustrator from Vancouver, whose clients include The Wall Street Journal, McDonalds, Coca Cola, and Pfizer, discovered that the best way to market her range of illustrations was to create pseudonyms. Under the names of Nadia Richie, Reese Harper, Claire Fraser, and Taren Riley, among others, Carter has bolstered her business. "The market changes like the wind and I feel that it's really important to be willing to change and do different things as an artist or you're not going to make a living," explains Carter. "In the local market in British Columbia it's fine to present a variety of different styles, but to promote yourself in the United States you have to put together a really succinct package or the art directors are not going to see clearly what you do. I wanted to put new imagery out there without affecting my existing career, so I decided to come up with pseudonyms." In addition, selling her illustrations in several ways―such as commis-sioiied art, rights-managed illustrations, and royalty free (RF) images―helps grow her business as well. Furthermore, the innovative artist just launched a website, www.imagezoo.com, that promotes high-quality royalty-free illustrations from her own collection and from 14 other artists.
