The electric industry is in turmoil in many places in the industrialised world. Among others more or less radical schemes for increased competitiveness are being introduced and implemented. The role and position of the control centre in charge of 'round the clock' operating and controlling these processes will not remain unchanged. A number of external and internal (company related) factors force the industry to rethink their control centre concepts. As a courtacy to Professor Dieter Rumpel upon his leave of the University of Duisburg, this paper attempts to scan the technical control centre issues which are relevant in the presently changing context. Different innovative technical solutions are being outlined in order to initiate a broad international discussion on the role and design of the control centre in an open market environment.
