After five years in military service, I resolved never to wait in a line again - chow, payday, boarding, disembarking, etc. Never say, "Never" - civilian life has its own kind of waiting. On the Gulf Coast, we wait every year for hurricane season. Despite improved forecasting, coast inhabitants are not certain until the last moment whether or not their area may be devastated. While waiting, precautions are taken - generators, water bottles, batteries and basic foods are checked, and the refrigerator is emptied of nonessentials. A choice is made while watching the weather reports - evacuate or hunker down. Tornados are often on the perimeter of the hurricane, so thoughts are given to pulling a mattress over those in a bathtub! Ah, then the cleanup. It might take a year or more.
