Russia's Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has signalled its interest innacquiring the outstanding shares in its Belarusian affiliate, after thenstate property committee said it was preparing to restart the auctionnof 51% of the share capital of MTS Belarus. Reportedly, thenBelarusian government has not altered its valuation of the stake, atnaround US$1bn. This suggests to BMI that MTS – which previouslynbaulked at the high asking price – now views the unit or thenBelarusian mobile market in a more positive light. However, asnMTS' woes deepen in neighbouring Uzbekistan, we caution that thenbusiness environment in the region remains challenging and capablenof sudden, politically-motivated turbulence.
