摘要

1. Digita needs to diversify away from broadcasting if its business is to be financially sustainable and its new strategic focus on the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) market offers ample growth opportunities; targeting Finland's 4mn smart meters is a good start. 2. Its use of low power wide area technology gives its partners a low-cost alternative to mobile connectivity and one that is scalable for future needs. Finnish digital transmission and broadcasting operator Digita has set itself the goal of digitalising all of Finland's 4mn water meters, using low power wide area networking (LPWAN) technology to connect them all to a centralised monitoring platform that both water suppliers and consumers can interact with and better manage water consumption. In 2018, Digita embarked on a number of trials with municipal and regional utilities, including Haminan Vesi, as well as with smart meter vendors/distributors and with backend monitoring and invoicing platform providers. With the Finnish government pushing for high standards in natural resource management and actively encouraging the use of technology to achieve its goals, we believe Digita - through its nationwide wireless transmission network - is well place to exploit the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) market in Finland. Digita's nationwide LP-WAN network is based on the LoRaWAN specification. Because all of the radio channels LoRaWAN systems use are tuned to the same frequencies, Digita can effectively operate a single wireless data network on top of its existing infrastructure, keeping build-out costs low. Low costs are essential in the smart metering space where devices typically generate very small volumes of data and not always constantly; revenues from such services will be low, therefore costs must also be low for the business to be profitable.
