The Latest: Property developer Persimmon Homes has applied for a Code Powers licence as it looks to deploy its own fibre-tothe-premises (FTTP) network under the FibreNest brand in areas where ultrafast broadband services are limited or not available.The decision comes following difficulties faced by the developer to ensure high quality broadband connection to its housingthrough established telecoms operators’ networks.Implications: By obtaining a Code Powers licence, Persimmon Homes’ own FTTP network rollout will become easier and faster,enabling the company to ensure full fibre broadband to its buildings before new purchasers move in. Although FibreNest willcompete directly with established internet service providers (ISP), we do not believe business diversification to be behindPersimmon Homes’ move. On the contrary, we believe the developer’s move into fixed broadband networks is aimed at benefitingits own core business. There is growing evidence that house prices tend to be lower in areas where high speed broadband is limitedor not available, as fast internet connection has now become an essential requirement for buyers. FibreNest’s FTTP network willtherefore sustain the market valuation of Persimmon Homes’ properties, potentially enabling the developer to increase prices giventhe attraction of high quality full fibre coverage.
