The Latest: High-performance chip-maker Nvidia has agreed to buy networking hardware vendor Mellanox for USD6.9bn.Implications: The move is aimed at making Nvidia more relevant to hyperscale datacentre and supercomputing customers, but italso frustrates rivals' efforts to grow their footprints. Mellanox's proprietary ethernet-based interconnection technology is used tominimise latency in high-speed computing environments such as servers and increasingly datacentres,unlocking the full potentialof processors such as those developed by Nvidia. The latter states that the deal will allow it to optimise datacentre-scale workloadsacross the entire computing, networking and storage stack to achieve higher performance, greater utilisation and lower operatingcost for customers.
