The Latest: On 24 December, the UK and the EU reached an agreement in terms of their future cooperation. We want to focus on two key TMT issues. Implications: The first is roaming within in the EU. Fees have been abolished since 2017, but with the UK fully leaving the EU, the regulation will stop applying to the country. This means that roaming fees could be reintroduced for UK users, but we do not believe this will be the case, because of competition. 1. It is a popular service for many customers, and we expect that at least one of the four operators will keep the status quo, making it more difficult for others to make the switch; this will be akin to the opening up to IP services a decade ago, where 3’s decision to allow Skype led to all operators doing so; 2. Furthermore, many of the operators present in the UK are large international actors, with a presence in many EU markets, allowing them to offer the service at no external cost; 3. Finally, because of the pandemic, it remains to be seen when international travel will return to the level we saw before 2020, meaning that fewer people are likely to go abroad in Europe in 2021.
