Ahmad et al.have recently reported the use of rubber seed oil (RSO) with high free fatty acid (FFA) content for the production of biodiesel in a two-step process comprising the acid-catalyzed esterification and the base-catalyzed transesterification. The authors evaluated and optimized both steps of the biodiesel production process by utilizing the response surface methodology (RSM) in combination with the analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the quadratic model. The effects of four independent variables, namely oil-to-methanol molar ratio, catalyst concentration, temperature and time, were investigated through the central composite design (CCD). The Design Expert 8.0 software was used to analyze the experimental data, to determine the parameters of the quadratic equation, to test the statistical significance of the model, each term of the model equation and the lack of fit (LOF) and to predict the optimal point for both acid esterification and base transesterification.
