Energy management in existing buildings can produce significant savings opportunities, often by focusing on low-cost measures. This article will discuss the energy management methods used to reduce (weather-normalized) energy usage by 15% across eighteen hospital facilities (totaling 7.7 million ft~2) owned by a large healthcare provider in Wisconsin. The approach is unique because it focuses solely on low-cost measures and demonstrates a simple and effective method of measurement and feedback to achieve the results. The sustainable energy savings have reduced CO_2 emissions by approximately 23,100 tons annually, and have created additional funds for the owner. The energy management process was a successful collaboration between executive management, engineering consultants, hospital facility directors, and maintenance personnel that utilized a variety of strategies to save energy in each facility.
