摘要

The combination of the concept of an integrated biorefinery with ionic liquid technology is critically assessed, and potentials for further research and development are identified. This contribution aims at critically assessing the potential of ionic liquids in the manufacture of renewable resource-based products, i.e. chemicals and biofuels, from an industrial chemistry point of view. After discussing the principles of cellulose dissolution on the molecular level, the field of ionic liquid application in biomass processing is analysed on the examples of four case studies. Both potential pitfalls and research opportunities are identified.
