Liberalizign the electricity industry and attempting to reduce the emissions of greendhouse gases are the two dominant trends in european energy policy. The last-mentioned issue might require the contribution from renewable energy technologies, but at present Most renewables cannot compete on their own with conventional technologies. Thus, it can be expected that if renewable must Compete solely on market conditions alone this will slow down or even halt the development of new renewable capacity.
