The linearized inverse scattering methods based on the Born and Kirchhoff approximations are investigated with an emphasis on applicability of the transverse (T)- transverse (T) pulse-echo mode. The linearized methods for the longitudinal (L)- longitudinal (L) pulse-echo mode are first summarized for the latter use of comparison. Then the linearization process for the T-T mode is presented. In order to recognize a difference in the scattering amplitudes for the L-L and T-T modes, the backscattered waveforms are calculated for a defect model of two cavities and the effect of strong interactions is visualized for the T-T mode. The linearized inverse scattering analysis is carried out for both of the L-L and T-T modes by utilizing the whole backscattered waveforms. The performance of the geometrical reconstruction for the T-T mode inversion is discussed in comparison with the L-L mode inversion.
