Isn't it amazing that, in the 21st century. UK chief executive officers (CEOs) still wait each month for the profit figures to compare with the budget to determine their company's performance? The financial results are just that - results, and not measures of performance. Besides, they are history Furthermore, many traditional measures, which are used to support the financial numbers such as overhead recovery and purchase price variance, are flawed as they promote the wrong behaviour. UK companies could dramatically improve their productivity and hence their profitability if they just focused on the right seven measures. A Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) paper on UK productivity published in May 2003 said: "Despite its comparatively high growth rate in the last five years, the level of GDP per capita in the UK still falls behind most other advanced economies. In purchasing power terms, the gap to the United States is close to 40%, Switzerland 20%, Japan 11%, Germany 6% and France and Sweden 3%. The UK prosperity level is on a par with Italy". It is clear we need to do something dramatic to leapfrog our competition.
