摘要

Following on from the last issue (Apr/May 2004, Going going gone: Part 1 - Engineer supply and demand) Farr, Hodgson and Gindy conclude their discussion by considering issues associated with an ageing engineer workforce and developments that could ameliorate serious skill shortages. Following a sharp reduction in the supply of engineering graduates and growing competition in the form of recruitment into other careers, UK engineering businesses are faced with a skills crisis. This is of particular significance because the demographic of UK chartered engineers shows that the majority are nearing retirement. Thus, skilled engineers are disappearing from the workforce at an alarming rate. In the longer term, various initiatives (described in Part 1), plus growing demand and consequent remuneration, could raise the profile of an engineering career, and ultimately yield more young professionals. However, if companies are to prosper during the looming shortage, engineers currently in post must be persuaded to remain in work, and must be deployed to best advantage.
