A solid sphere has some good points as a mechanical bearing component; it has high compressive strength and in some situations can be used with just a point or line contact which augurs well for low friction operation and, in a VSU situation, more precise setting of the reduction with less slippage. Unfortunately for the model engineer with just the usual equipment in his or her workshop these drives will, in the main, be beyond them when it comes to machining some of the intricate shapes. Though that is the sort of statement that gets many to rise to the occasion and prove how wrong commentators can be. These VSU's have the one irritating feature that will also make them less acceptable to the model engineer as many of them exhibit the step down, unity to step up reduction cycle which we saw with the basic cone construction and which will require auxiliary gearing. However, the design results in a very compact casing and should not be dismissed out of hand.
