Rome wasn't built in a day, but Fort Washington Way in Cincinnati just may be rebuilt in 34 months, a feat that designers and constructors all agree seemed unlikely at the outset. Even now, as the finish line is evident, they can barely believe it. Project officials refer to the reconfiguration of U.S. 50, also designated as Interstate 71 through the city's business district, as a mini "Big Dig" partly because the complicated construction has major implications. Cincinnati is pinning a riverfront renaissance on the success of Fort Washington Way as a seamless passage between two sports complexes. And the methods by which the project is being completed so quickly—three years instead of seven or eight—will serve as an example for other builders, officials say.
