"Why do we need configuration software? Because this product has more than 10,000 possible variants!" says Trevor Herrington, Commercial Manager at GEC ALSTHOM. He is describing the company's latest range of "M-PACT" air circuit breakers (ACB). GEC ALSTHOM, jointly owned by GEC and ALCATEL ALSTHOM, is a world leader in energy and rail transport. Amongst its diversified operations is the Industrial Equipment Division which includes GALVI, a grouping of GEC ALSTHOM International's Low Voltage Equipment manufacturers. GALVI has sales of over $100m and employs 2,500 people worldwide. UK operations, based in Liverpool, produce a variety of fuses and switchgear. It is also the worldwide Centre of Excellence for ACBs which are high energy interruptable switches, used in light and heavy industry such as factories, power stations and hospitals. The M-PACT is, according to Herrington, "the first in a line of products which will radically alter the way we design, manufacture and sell."
