Industrial managers are sometimes accused of having a myopic attitude to the whole issue of training and people development, that they treat any outlay involved as an expense and not as a judicious, indeed essential, investment in the future of their companies. In turn they frequently level similar accusations of shortsightedness at the city investment analysts, who can exercise a crucial influence on company share prices and, hence, the very independence of those companies. The accusation, of course, is that analysts are concerned only for the short-term profits performance of companies and take little heed of those aspects of management policy that operate over broader timescales.
