We develop the linear stability analysis of the rest state of a ternary liquid layer submitted to rigid, impervious and conductive boundary conditions, and study the influence of the cross-diffusional effects. We restrict the present study to the overstability case, and show, that the approximate formulas of binary systems for the overstability branch (when the Prandtl number is negligible compared to the Schmidt number) are still good approximations for ternary mixtures, provided we define a new separation ratio Ψ taking into account the cross-diffusion. Finally we compare the results with previous experiments.
