A rational analysis of mixture and excess properties has been carried out by means of the relations obtained directly from Basic Thermodynamic Relationships. A family of theoretical functions, able to describe these properties, has been developed. The same functional structure is used for the simplest model (no interactions between components) as for more complex models including these interactions. To test the usefulness of these functions, their correlation with experimental data has been compared with that of some empirical functions of widespread use, and very satisfactory results have been obtained.
