Three-dimensional graphical representation of the exergy loss of all subprocesses in a distillation column on an integrated energy-utilization diagram (abbreviated as Integrated EUD or IEUD) is applied t characterize behaviors of distillation columns. By using this graphical representation, six kinds of exergy loss, i.e. losses due to heating and mixing in liquid phase, losses due to cooling and mixing in vapor phase, and losses due to evaporation of light components and condensation of heavy components through phase chan- ges, can be elucidated compactly and clearly.
