By comparing four common cycles, a Rankine cycle, a compression heat pump, an absorption heat pump and distillation, two remarkable features, minimum -emission eature of a closed lop and the feature as a tool to accept and/or release work (or work-equivalent energy), are pointed out. The latter feature is examined in detail and the role of a loop is found to be realization of an energy lever for obtaining high-quality energy from low-quality energy. The function of a loop is developed by a successive sequence of processes.
