House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) says she wants to include assistance for the water sector in the next round of coronavirus legislation, though utility sources say it remains unclear whether that assistance will include increasing EPA infrastructure programs or other measures, especially given a focus on crafting a bipartisan bill. Speaking to reporters March 30, Pelosi and Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ), chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, touted legislative provisions the House sought unsuccessfully to include in the most recent assistance that would prevent utilities from shutting off water service and assist low-income customers in paying their utility bills, as well as possible new efforts to boost investment in water infrastructure. Pallone said the assistance needs to go beyond cash payments to individuals and include the buildout of drinking water infrastructure and broadband "so that the infrastructure is in place for people in underserved areas or the people in areas that have been hard hit."
