The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in a new report largely backs the 2012 conclusions of the National Toxicology Program (NTP) that styrene poses increased risks for several types of cancer, including a form of leukemia, clearing the path for EPA to reach a similar conclusion as it assess the ubiquitous chemical's risks. NAS' report, "Review of the Styrene Assessment in the National Toxicology Program 12th Report on Carcinogens [RoC]," released July 28, states that the committee "concludes that NTP correctly determined that styrene should be considered for listing in the RoC. There is sufficient exposure to a significant number of persons residing in the United States to warrant such consideration..... the committee finds that compelling evidence exists to support a listing of styrene as, at a minimum, reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen."
