EPA is rejecting calls by its Office of Inspector General (OIG) to pursue more stringent action to reduce leaks of the potent greenhouse gas methane from natural gas pipelines, including rejecting OIG's recommendation for a performance goal specifically for distribution. Instead, EPA is underscoring its use of voluntary measures to combat such "downstream" leaks, and is declining to implement OIG calls in its July 25 report, "Improvements Needed in EPA Efforts to Address Methane Emissions From Natural Gas Distribution Pipelines," to track distribution sector emissions to determine if regulations are needed.
