Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) has reintroduced legislation to overhaul the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) with 28 Democratic and independent co-sponsors - one supporter less than Lautenberg's last attempt at TSCA reform had at the end of the 112th Congress, and apparently with the loss of Sen. Mark Begich's (D-AK) backing. Despite the fact the bill, the Safe Chemicals Act of 2013, is one vote shy of its 29 co-sponsor total from 2012, it could still gather additional co-sponsors throughout the year. The previous version of the bill was introduced with just four co-sponsors but during 2011 and 2012 picked up support from an additional 25 senators. Lautenberg and other senators in press releases on the new bill touted the 28 co-sponsors that have signed on.
