Sylvia Burwell, nominated by President Obama to lead the White House Office of Management & Budget (OMB), appears likely to win Senate confirmation after GOP senators raised few objections at her confirmation hearing, though Burwell was urged by several senators to take steps to reduce the costs and other burdens of agency rules. At the April 9 Senate Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee hearing, Burwell vowed to assess the reasons why some EPA rules and other agencies' policies have been undergoing OMB Office of Information & Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) review for many months longer than the typical 90-day review period. Burwell added that if confirmed as OMB director she would assess whether the regulatory system could be improved to reduce burdens.
