摘要

A nuclear weapons watchdog coalition is pressing the Energy Department (DOE) and lawmakers to boost funding for nuclear weapons cleanup, as activists note that several weapons cleanup sites appear to be underfunded in the president's fiscal year 2014 $5.62 billion budget request for DOE's Environmental Management (EM) program. Coalition members believe some sites will be unable to meet enforceable cleanup agreements, facing fines and penalties and forcing DOE to renegotiate the agreements with regulators. But DOE EM chief David Huizenga in an April 10 DOE news release is maintaining that the funding level under the FY14 request will allow the EM program "to meet enforceable cleanup milestones due in fiscal year 2014."
