EPA is urging the U.S. Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which is developing a framework to improve the cybersecurity of the nation's critical infrastructure, to limit any cybersecurity burdens its plan could place on the water sector given large unfunded needs to replace conventional water infrastructure. The agency's call could calm wastewater and drinking water officials, who have expressed concern that the Obama administration's efforts to improve cybersecurity could lead to new regulation and oversight by EPA.
