EPA and federal wildlife officials are working to craft within two years a joint framework for conducting ecological assessments for pesticide registrations under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in an effort to speed up the process and conserve resources, though stakeholders are urging the agencies to also look to industry to assist in the analysis. The joint framework, recommended by federal science advisors earlier this year and driven by dwindling resources, would align the agencies' practices after years of disagreements that have resulted in the agencies conducting separate assessments - or avoiding mandatory consultations - leading environmentalists to bring a series of suits in an effort to force officials to retroactively assess whether pesticides harm listed species.
