摘要

EPA has unveiled new data from four states that show fishermen generally eat more fish than the agency's national default assumptions, a study that expands the agency's focus on fish consumption rates outside of the Pacific Northwest and could increase pressure on regulators to consider the data when they craft water quality limits. But environmentalists doubt regulators will use the data or that EPA will force them to when setting water quality standards and other regulatory limits. They point to a pending effort in Florida, one of the states where EPA assessed fish consumption rates, where regulators recently rejected using survey data in EPA's report when crafting revised water quality criteria to protect human health from toxics. State officials said EPA's 1994 survey results were out of date and instead used newer data that estimates fish consumption rates at levels higher than EPA's default estimate of 17.5 grams per day (g/day). However a separate state review panel recently ordered revisions to the regulators' proposed criteria.
