EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy is vowing to greatly expand the agency's environmental justice work started by her predecessor Lisa Jackson by restructuring the agency's grants program to include a greater equity focus, asking her advisors to devise a strategy to measure success, and renew the agency's focus on community water issues. Promising to "make environmental justice a mainstream of the core work of our agency," McCarthy told a Sept. 11 meeting of the National Environmental Justice Advisory Council (NEJAC) in Atlanta that she will craft a grant coordination strategy that will focus on key areas highlighted by recent 'themes" she released as a guide for priorities during her tenure, including curbing climate change, improving water quality and five other goals.
