EPA's enforcement chief is vowing to pursue "strong and effective" oversight of state enforcement of federal environmental laws and improve coordination with states on enforcement efforts, including having EPA take action against facilities that are violating pollution laws in states that are unable or unwilling to prosecute them.rnCynthia Giles, head of EPA's Office of Enforcement & Compliance Assurance, told an environmental law conference Sept. 23 that the agency wants to work cooperatively with states to ensure they have the necessary resources to prosecute violations of environmental laws states implement under delegated authority and is increasing its efforts to monitor and report on states' performance enforcing relevant laws.
