The National Mining Association (NMA) is calling for "tenacious" congressional scrutiny of EPA's review of dozens of mountaintop mining permits after the Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that agency efforts to strengthen its reviews of the Army Corps of Engineers permits has left nearly half of them in limbo for more than a year. "This analysis by [GAO] truly underscores the need for 'tenacious oversight' of EPA that has been promised next year by congressional leaders and lends credibility to NMA's claim that EPA is acting outside the bounds of the law," an NMA source says. EPA's efforts to address mountaintop mining are also under review by the agency's Inspector General (IG), according to the IG's Fiscal Year 2011 Annual Plan (see related story).
