Public health advocates are welcoming a recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report that adopts a precautionary approach to toxic mold exposure and calls on EPA to lead efforts to bolster federal warnings about exposure risks and improve research,which the agency says is needed to set a health protection standard. Some advocates are also suggesting that because the report recommends mitigation even in the absence of a standard,it could help overcome insurance and other industry groups' legal defenses in toxic mold suits,which cite studies claiming exposure is not harmful.
