摘要

Amid growing pressure to better understand and regulate the human health and environmental risks posed by rapidly emerging nanotechnologies, EPA and the National Science Foundation (NSF) are launching a first-of-its-kind effort to develop a U.S.-based nanotechnology center that will train and educate scientists to conduct much-needed research that can be used to craft nanotechnology risk management policies. Developing a large body of scientists, particularly in the United States, with an intimate understanding of the toxicity and risks of nanotechnology has become a major concern for industry and government. At an Oct. 2 hearing of the House Science Committee's research and science education subcommittee, several nanotechnology experts highlighted the need for domestic retention of scientists that can help foster innovation and provide expertise to federal and state officials on nanotechnology.
