Wyoming must pay more than $100,000 to neighboring Montana as a result of decade-old water compact violations, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Feb. 20. The justices, in an unsigned decision, upheld the judgment of a court-appointed official, known as a special master. The master found that Wyoming must compensate its downstream neighbor for failing to ensure that enough water was delivered to the Tongue River Reservoir, located just on the Montana side of the border between the two states. The violations at issue occurred in 2004 and 2006.
