Water quality in the Animas River returned to pre-event levels within two weeks of the August 2015 Gold King Mine spill triggered by Environmental Protection Agency contractors in southwest Colorado, according to a report from the agency. The EPA issued a Fate & Transport Analysis Jan. 6 detailing the effects of the 3-million-gallon spill of mining wastewater and sediment on water quality in the river after the release. A focus of the analysis was whether any remaining impacts from the spill could be detected given the legacy of contamination from historic mining in the region where the shuttered mine is located.
