The Environmental Protection Agency plans to solicit advice from public health experts before it develops draft recreational criteria for viruses that would rely on coliphage to indicate the presence of pathogens at levels that could make people sick. Coliophage is a type of bacteriophage that could be used as an indicator of the presence of pathogenic viruses. The panel of experts will be meeting at the EPA's 2016 Recreational Waters Conference, which runs April 12-15 in New Orleans, to discuss the latest research on bacteriophage. The EPA initially planned to propose the draft criteria by the end of 2015, but the schedule has now slipped back by a year due to the questions raised by the waste-water utility sector (45 ER 2935, 10/10/14).
