Republicans and Democrats alike on a House Oversight & Government Reform panel March 15 urged the Obama administration's top regulatory gatekeeper to be more transparent and accountable in its process for clearing environmental and other federal regulations. The chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C), and its top Democrat, Rep. Gerald Connolly (D-Va.), said the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs has been slow to adopt transparency reforms, some of which date to 2003. In addition, several panel members at the hearing, including the chairman of the full oversight committee, Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), grilled OIRA Administrator Howard Shelanski over his responsiveness to a subpoena the committee issued in July 2015.
