摘要

House Republicans banded together to shoot down Flint, Mich.-related amendments during a March 16 markup of the Budget Committee's fiscal blueprint, floated by the committee's majority the day before. Shortly after lawmakers launched into the amendment series, Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) urged Budget Committee colleagues to back $475.5 million in federal funds, matched by state outlays, to aid Michigan in its ongoing effort to provide clean drinking water to Flint residents. The amendment failed 21-14, despite a heartfelt plea from the Michigan lawmaker. "We've got to make sure this never happens in an American city again. There are 153,000 water systems, and we've got to ensure it doesn't happen. But right now, we've got a moral obligation to these families in Flint," she said. "The money must be met by the State of Michigan; this is not a federal handout. We are helping the people of Flint, and holding the State of Michigan accountable as well."
