摘要

Changes stemming from the introduction of non-native species are a major threat to the Great Lakes ecosystem and are getting worse, a Canadian official said Oct. 4. Since 1839 a total of 185 invasive species have been identified in the Great Lakes, and at least 30 percent of those have had moderate to significant environmental impacts on the Great Lakes ecosystem, Nancy Stadler-Salt, Great Lakes program coordinator at Environment and Climate Change Canada, told a conference in Toronto. "Invasive species are one of the greatest threats to biodiversity in the Great Lakes region," the Canadian environmental official said. Invasive species have deteriorated water quality, disrupted the ecosystem's food web and degraded the basin's habitat, she said. The findings will be included in a State of the Great Lakes report the U.S. and Canadian governments expect to release in early 2017, the first comprehensive environmental analysis of the water bodies since 2011. Highlights of findings that will be in the 2017 report were discussed at the conference Oct. 4.
