Major transportation projects including New York's Tappan Zee Bridge replacement are using innovative techniques to integrate environmental reviews and permitting requirements to accelerate project delivery, federal highway officials said at a Sept. 29 webinar. As part of its Every Day Counts initiative, the Federal Highway Administration is urging transportation agencies to come up with innovative ways to conduct National Environmental Policy Act reviews and environmental permitting requirements at the same time, said James Gavin, with FHWA's Office of Project Development and Environmental Review. Agencies can identify any "hurdles" that must be cleared early on and "populate permitting information as they go through the NEPA process," Gavin said.
